Calvin's planned life of quiet study ended in 1536 when chance took him to Geneva. Here, apart from a short exile, he remained for the rest of his life. His time there was marked by bitter struggles over the independence of church from state and the rules he tried to impose on Geneva as a whole. This biography shows him against the background of the turbulent time in which he lived, putting him and his ideas in their context. 1977
